Snow Leopard in the wild

Kids Books About Snow Leopards

Snow Leopards are fascinating animals that most kids will only see if they make a trip to a zoo. These beautiful large cats with extra long tails and huge paws live in the high altitudes of the Himalayan Mountains and even the peoples who live in this region rarely see these masters at camouflage.

We’ve compiled kids books about snow leopards for kids who want to learn more about the amazing Snow Leopard and we also featured Snow Leopards in our January Book and Bear Subscription Box.

Here are some of the fabulous books we found about Snow Leopards:

Best Snow Leopard Books For Children

Snow Leopard: Ghost of the Mountains

Snow Leopard: Ghost of the Mountains by Justin Anderson is our Picture Book of the Month for kids ages 3-7. In this book you’ll:

“Join a zoologist in the Himalayan mountains as he searches for the elusive snow leopard. With her pale gold and silver-gray coat painted with black rosettes, the snow leopard blends into the boulders so well that it’s no wonder she’s called the gray ghost of the mountains. But the lucky  few who spot her will be rewarded with a sight they won’t soon forget.

Look! A line of paw prints in the snow. This might be your lucky day! Follow the tracks to discover the secret world of a rare and utterly majestic creature.‚ÄĚ (from the Back Cover of¬†Snow Leopard: Ghost of the Mountains)

The Storm Leopards

Most Book and Bear Boxes with chapter book include two books at two different reading levels to encourage newer chapter book readers to read on their own, but also to encourage families to read together and enjoy discussing the adventures in their new books.

The Storm Leopards by Holly Webb is an adventure story  highlighting the problems of both the loss of snow leopard habitat and the needs of the herding peoples of Mongolia.

“When Isabelle and her family go to the zoo, she is the only one to catch a glimpse of the elusive snow leopard. She is fascinated by the animal and wants to learn all about it.

One night, she wakes up to find herself in Mongolia, where snow leopards live. She meets a girl her age, and the two begin an exciting adventure to save a snow leopard and her two young cubs. But can the girls protect the beautiful cats from the hunters who are looking for them?‚ÄĚ (from the back cover of¬†The Storm Leopards)

Once you have finished reading about Isabelle’s adventure in Mongolia, be sure to read the back matter where the author highlights the work of The Snow Leopard Trust, which has developed an innovative plan to work together with the herders of China and Mongolia to curb hunting while also providing ways for the families of herders to sell their toys and Christmas ornaments in the US, Britain and other countries so the occasional loss of a sheep or other animal will not cause them as much financial hardship. This amazing program allows the herders to help in the conservation of the snow leopard, and even allows the people of the U.S., the U.K., and other countries to support snow leopard conservation and purchase some cool gifts, too!

Snow Leopard Conservation Efforts

Many zoos are helping to preserve the snow leopard species.

Many zoos are helping to preserve the Snow Leopard species in partnership with The Snow Leopard Trust as well. There are 120 zoos in the US alone participating in breeding and research to help keep the snow leopard from extinction. Check with your local zoo to see if they have a snow leopard you can see in real life.

To find out more about The Snow Leopard Trust conservation group, visit their website: https://snowleopard.org/

There you’ll find more photos of wild snow leopards, information on the species, the chance to adopt a wild snow leopard, and see how to purchase hand-made ornaments crafted by the people who live in snow leopard territory and help in the conservation efforts.
